Have you sky dived or bungee jumped?
Did you ever purposefully do anything scary? When did you last work up the courage to talk to a complete stranger at a bar or restaurant? Why would you do anything scary on purpose in the first place, aside from a childish dare?

Truth is, many of us do our best to avoid scary situations. What we don’t realise is that by doing something scary we allow ourselves to grow, and this growth has the exciting potential of changing our lives for the better.
I am a fan of quotes and here’s one I would like to share with you today. Eleanor Roosevelt one said, ‘Do one thing every day that scares you.’ The question is, why would she recommend that?
When you do something that scares you, whether it scares you a little or has your knees shaking, you will grow; you will expand the limitations of your comfort zone, and you may find that the thing you were scared of is actually enjoyable. You may find yourself wishing you’d done it before.
Someone I know who was petrified of sky-diving is now hooked on it.
Her office was doing a charity jump and she didn’t want to feel left out and seem ‘chicken’, so she signed up to do it.
She didn’t sleep for weeks prior to the event, so you can imagine how she felt on the day of the jump. To save face, she jumped.
Now she makes it a point to sky-dive as often as she can because she sees the fun side of it.
Now imagine if public speaking scared you, or holding seminars or webinars, or making presentations in front of your regional managers, or how about being scared to rock climb or ski.
Could you be missing out on something? Might you find facilitating seminars fun? Would you find skiing an absolute thrill? You wouldn’t know until you tried, right?
What could you do daily that scares you that will allow you to grow, and perhaps have fun doing it? Operating the switchboard? Greeting executives at the office? Making hotel and flight arrangements for your boss?
Expanding on Eleanor Roosevelt’s quote, as well as doing something daily that scares you, how about doing something every month, every quarter or getting involved in an annual ‘scare-athon’ such as a marathon run?
So, what scares you? Start a list of things that scare you, that petrify you: that make you say, “No way would I do that. I can’t and won’t, no matter what.”
Pick a scary event or situation that you will commit to doing, and make sure you do it, and, when you do, jot down how you feel after the event: did you enjoy it?
If yes, how much fun was it? Would you do it again?
If no, it’s still a learning and growing experience.
So either way, you win!
What scary situation would you like to conquer today, this month, this quarter and this year?
Make a list, take action and watch yourself grow, have fun, and enjoy life more.
